Search Evolved with #Hashtags

Searching with Hashtags:

People love a good hashtag; it is used on all the major platforms (Google+, Facebook and Twitter) to allow you to search for conversations and topics you may be interested in. At Space & Time we like to explore the future of search and social media...

Hashtag Search

Using hashtags for searching could be a game changer. In 2009 Google introduced “Real Time Search” which included information from the likes of Twitter, Facebook and Blogs. Below is a graph, using Google Trends, which shows the interest for the search term #iPad. There was a big spike of interest in 2010, then the powers that be decided that “Real Time Search” wasn't going to work out. This is probably due to Google working on their Google+ social platform...

Hashtag Query Trends

With the advent of Google+ they are looking, as always, to bring a richer experience to Google Search and have applied this when searching for hashtags, this is how it works:

  • When you search on Google for a hashtag a set of relevant Google+ posts may appear to the right of the regular results.
  • You’ll only be able to see posts that have been shared publicly or shared with you.
  • If you click on any of these posts you'll go to Google+, where you'll see the full set of relevant posts.
  • You'll also see links to search for these hashtags on other social sites.

I have been keeping an eye on this for a while now and have seen some new updates when searching for search terms with hashtags. When searching for #AdWords this is what came up on my screen (searched for on 13.03.2014). On the right hand side you can see posts related to your search which will then stream new posts. Not forgetting other social platforms, at the bottom of the stream there is also an opportunity to go straight to Twitter and Facebook.

Hashtags will continue to play a significant part in search marketing  Big brands already build their video marketing campaigns around hashtags, extending the reach across social media platforms. A great example from Adidas is their #ThankYouBrian campaign, in tribute to recently retired Irish Rugby, Six Nations and Lions legend Brian O'Driscoll.
